Panchayat poll and the ruling parties dismay show

Although the panchayat elections are not fought on party lines, the ruling party always gets the upper hand in putting up candidates of their choice even if it means hurting the candidature and sentiments of deserving candidates. The so called party blessed candidates were all out to woo the voters with forms of schemes of the ruling party which are only announced. This had indeed marred the chances of good individuals winning the local elections. But to the surprise and anguish of the ones flaunting scheme forms and collecting documents from the people they have lost the elections miserably. Now hectic moves are on to rope in the same individuals of whose winning chances were being sabotaged with scheme forms of the ruling party. It is the number of panchayats that will affiliate the ruling party that will save the face for them.

Matanhy Saldhana expired

Tourism, forest and environment minister Matanhy Saldhana expired after a massive heart attack today morning.





He was 64.



He started getting pains at around 2 am and rushed to the city hospital immediately by his wife.



“The heart attack was massive and we could not save him”, said Dr Oscar Rebello.



Dr Rebello even called other colleagues in order to save him. But it was futile.



He breathed his last at around 3.30 am.



Saldhana had returned home at around 1 am after attending Shigmo festival in Canacona.



After getting the news, chief minister Manohar Parrikar also rushed to his Taleigao residence.



Saldhana, basically an activist and environmentalist, was elected for the second time from Cortalim, this time on the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.



Earlier, in 2002, he was elected as the United Goans Democratic Party and had served as the minister in the then Manohar Parrikar-led government as the tourism and sports minister.



Born on 24 October 1948, he was once again sworn in on 16 March as the minister in a five-member cabinet of Parrikar.



A teacher by profession at Don Bosco Highschool in Panaji, Saldhana has been associated with almost all the major social issues, may it be of Konkani language, environment, fishing or even Konkan railway from the student days.



He was the founder and chairman of the National Fish Workers’ Forum, general secretary of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott, member of International Collective of Fish Workers and several other organizations including Konkani Bhasha Mandal.







Saldhana had taken initiative in fighting major issues like pollution of Zuari Industries in Sancoale, Konkan railway realignment as well as to make Konkani the official language of the state.



He had also taken initiative in forming Gomant Lok Pokx in late 80s and was its founder general secretary.



They were also running an English weekly "The Goan Weekly", raising several vital issues confronting Goa.

Late Mathany Saldhanha was a true Goan although under him the VCD embioglo was forced into the schools classrooms  but he was definately the first opnent of the cancellation of "Good Friday " holiday by the BJP govt .   He was the face or mascot of BJP during the assemble elections2012. Looking up at him chotolic voters brushed aside  the sins committed by the BJPduring their earlier stint of 2004.
Special status to Goa will reamin a distant dream now that the cruseader is no more. May God send us another good christian leader with guts in the rulling BJP who will stand for us and goans at large.
May  God grant etenal rest to the departed soul.

Regional Parties

In the run up to the 2012 Goa elections, politicians are out to woe the voters with a lot of goodies. A former CM  has realized his foully after so many years of committing the same  Mr. Matany Saldanha is preaching the lessons of forgiveness only to achieve his goals in life and ambitions of BJP to rule the state, who are using his clean image to garner the support of minorities .But if the situations for the minorities have not changed in other states ruled by the party like orissa and karnataka where Christians are ill-treated , then how  will the trial and error method work here .As a true goan I never expected a crusader of the Goan cause to go and join the BJP and back the national agenda and ideologies of BJP. It looks like he has forgotten the most important demand of the Goan people a Special status for the state which the BJP will never acknowledge. The fact that Mr Mathany is now talking about progress of the country, India and Indians itself smells of the taking over of  his mind by the ideologies of BJP who believe in akhand bharat and hindutva .They also talk about bringing the Gujrat model to our state politics. Mr Mathany soon after joining preaches forgiveness to such a party who never condemn the acts committed against the minorities. May be he is only talking about the Parikar Govts's foully during the tenure of BJP in Goa. Be the forceful entry into the Bishops palace, Good friday holiday  and destroying name plates of Christian houses in Panjm is hard to forget and forgive.  The communal turn of events in cuncolim in the year 2006  is also a bolt on the image of the BJP in Goa

Only a regional party with the goans themselves taking decisions about Goa and the future of our children is what every goan is dreaming about. the Goan people has to decide whether to bring in a change we have to ring in another national party or look up to the regional parties and the clean individuals entering the fray who can give us a clean government and cater to the needs of goans and Goa . We should not let the non goans decide about Goa and its people but we the people of Goa has to bring in the much needed change in this election by voting for the safety and securing the future of our Children.Corrruption is an evil in the soceity affecting a very few  but commulalism is the devil which once unlashed can destroy  the whole society at large.

BJP  is also  a national party along with the congress  having their high commands to decide on and about Goa and its people.
